Why should I have a commitment ceremony when it does not give me any legal rights?

Good question. Why any kind of a ceremony? Ceremonies are rituals we have celebrated for thousands of years. A ritual is a very powerful way to say "I love you". Notice how you felt when you saw the funeral procession for the Pope or the last Royal Wedding – the color, the music, the overall feeling of magnificence. Rituals and ceremonies are occasions that speak to us at some ancient, cellular level.

COMMITMENT - What does that mean?

  • You are not thinking that if this doesn’t work out, another one will come along.

  • Out of all the other people I have met, I want to share my life with you as my partner.

  • We may have differences of opinion, we may become angry with one another, but the quarrels do not alter the depth of our relationship.

Without symbolically grounding your relationship with some kind of ceremony, whether private or public, you virtually have one foot out the door.

Reasons you want to have a commitment ceremony or holy union:

  1. You have made a mutual agreement that your relationship is permanent.

  2. You are willing to let the outside world know you love each other.

  3. You want to retain the memory of such a special occasion.

  4. You will receive a certificate you can display in your home, stating that you have now joined together in a spiritual partnership and a loving, supportive family unit.

  5. Whether you are contemplating a commitment ceremony or a gay marriage, the only thing that should matter is love. Read why the fuss about gay marriages?
