Why the Fuss About Gay Marriages?

As a minister, my teachings tell me that God is love, that God does not judge and that everyone is a child of God. Jesus didn’t say, “We are all sons of God, except for you gay people.” He accepted everyone who came to him for prayer, for healing and for love.

We don’t have to rehash all the silly reasons some people give for not wanting gay marriages to be legal. They all stem from fear, ignorance or unwillingness to change. Bottom line is, every reason stated against same sex marriages amount to only one. “We’ve always done it (marriages) this way therefore we want to continue to do it the same way.” If this kind of thinking pervaded all the areas of society today, for instance, we wouldn’t have electronic devices. After all, a typewriter was good enough for grandpa, it’s good enough for me. Not a good argument to warrant being against same sex marriages.

Let’s look at some of the benefits of legal gay marriages

• It’s generally sexual promiscuity that invites sexually transmitted diseases. Allowing same sex marriages would curb this trend because marriage, more than anything, promotes monogamy.
  
  
• The world is overpopulated and there are millions of orphaned children. More gay marriages would most likely mean more of these children would be adopted into loving homes.
  
  
• The argument of ‘slippery slope’ doesn’t hold water. Gay marriage has been legal in Scandinavian countries for years. All this has done is to promote compassion and tolerance for diversity.
  
  
• Homosexuality is not a perversion; it’s not even a choice. There are same sex couples in the animal world who do not obviously make the choice. They are born to love each other, just as we all are born with a particular nature.
  
  
• Denying any person the right to marry is a violation of religious and civil freedom.
  
  
• Denying the legality of same sex marriage is a form of minority discrimination
