| In the olden days, people had certain superstitions about moving into a new environment. My grandmother would tell me that you don't go into a house until you have brought a knife. I have no idea what that meant. Other people believe you should scatter rock salt or burn sage throughout the house to dispel any negative energies that may have inhabited the premises before. I am sure your parents and grandparents all had specific methods and customs. For instance, following is part of a Native American House Blessing: May this home be a good place
for us to live, Here is another commonly used blessing: Lord, Bless this house, so that
any who pass it will be more aware of beauty, It is our goal that we ground your home in love, that we bless your home in whatever manner is most comforting for you. For our house blessings, we do a general blessing for the entire property (house and yard), then we light tea candles (they are not too hot to hold) and ask each one of your guests to choose a room and say a special prayer for that room, blessing the space with whatever feeling they choose, i.e., "may this dining room be a place of nourishment, love, joy and togetherness…may this yard be a garden of life, newness and color, filled with days of sunshine and smiles."
